There’s Not Enough Time! What Can Patients and Healthcare Providers Do About It?

Our panel of experts addressed the persistent challenge of time limitations imposed by the healthcare system and what those providing and receiving care can do about it. The discussion focused on interventions that benefit patient care while helping providers increase job satisfaction and workplace efficiencies.

Panelists:

Jessica Garnsey, PA-C is a cardiology physician assistant at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake, NY with a certificate in palliative care and serious illness from CSU Shirley Haynes Institute for Palliative Care. Her clinical interests include heart failure management and palliative care. She lives in Saranac Lake, NY with her husband and black lab, Nora.

Col. James W. Baker (ret.) is a patient who served with the Vermont State Police for over 30 years and was director (2006-2009) before working as an independent consultant for the numerous federal law enforcement agencies. Currently, Baker offers services in leadership coaching, first responder safety and wellness and law enforcement executive searches.

Michael Welther, MD received his MD from the University of Wisconsin and completed a residency in family medicine at the University of Arizona. Dr. Welther worked as a primary care physician in Arlington, VT for over 35 years having founded Arlington Family Practice. He is currently retired and serves as Board President of the Center for Communication in Medicine, a Bennington, VT nonprofit organization.

Jeni Coombs is 55 years old and has been battling breast cancer for 8 years. She has an amazing husband of 32 years and 2 beautiful children Nicholas (32) and Kayleigh (27). It has been a very difficult journey but she has learned to be her own patient advocate. She remains positive and celebrates every milestone along the way.

Interviewees:

Mary Chamberlin, MD is an oncologist and Director of the Breast Cancer Program at Dartmouth Health in Lebanon, NH. Dr. Chamberlin is an associate professor at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. She attended the University of Vermont College of Medicine and completed her residency at Fletcher Allen Health Care, Burlington, VT.

Kevin Dailey is a patient who recently retired as an administrator at Southwestern Vermont Health Care in Bennington, VT. He holds a J.D. degree and has a long history of community involvement having served on numerous area boards and committees in the town of Arlington, VT.
